KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 31 (Bernama) -- The government will issue a warning to the contractor of Plaza Rakyat, a project that has been abandoned for 12 years, to start work soon or lose the job.
Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said: "In a week or two, we will be issuing a warning to the contractor to continue the project.
"If we don't see any development in two months, then the tender awarded to the contractor will be terminated and a new one will be called," he said after giving Chinese New Year goodies to senior citizens and the disabled in Lembah Pantai parliamentary constituency here Sunday.
Global Upline Sdn Bhd had been awarded the Plaza Rakyat contract, a mixed development project comprising three buildings for office space, condominium and a budget hotel.
Plaza Rakyat which in Dec 1992 cost RM1.2 billion is a joint-venture project between Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Plaza Rakyat Sdn Bhd (PRSB).
Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had visited the abandoned project twice since taking over as prime minister in April 2009.
On compensation to tenants at Plaza Rakyat, Raja Nong Chik said the government was not involved as it was the responsibility of the project developer.
The minister also said the planned flyover at Bangsar Baru and Bangsar Park would not be built if residents in the area were against the project.

I was like...OMG..i been living in KL for so many years (from the day i born till 2008) before i going to penang to further my studies... this building just stood there without any further progress..
seriously , i nvr see their proposal building model.. but i think it willl be at least something like the OneUtama at least? with hotel proposal and lots of commercial block , this is definately one of malaysia most exciting landmark in history..With linkage to the Putra LRT , one of the most important catalyst for the building future development, this one is a must-complete project of the decade
stood firm beside the ever known Puduraya bus station , this building suppose to increase the land value of the building surrounding it.. but abandon for so many years..
wonder if i could see the Plaza rakyat to be completed at least in 10years time? who knows.. we will just patiently awaits..
comeon......
